This show starts off a little more slowly compared to Attack on Titan but as it progresses, the pace of the story starts to kick in and it really reels you in and that's how it is similar to Attack on Titan. Aside from the most obvious similarity (godlike Hiroyuki Sawano soundtracks), a lot of the combat aspects and general situations bare striking parallels. For instance, humanity is distinctly at a disadvantage vs the significantly stronger invading force in both shows. The shows both focus on a small group of teenage cadets, who quickly rise up in value during wartime as the more experienced soldiers fall (conveniently they just seem to be better and/or luckier than just about everyone else).
